The Chastleton Project

Tinius-Arts was awarded a commission by the Board of The Chastleton Cooperative Association to create a series of fine art photographic prints capturing the distinctive architectural details of the historic Chastleton Apartment Building on 16th Street in northwest Washington. The commission comprises 52 different framed prints, which are permanently installed throughout the building. The project was completed in February 2009.

“Greg Tinius was awarded the commission based on his distinctive ability to capture the unique details in traditional and classical buildings such as The Chastleton in a timeless and beautifully artistic manner,” said Michael Franck, Principal of Franck & Lohsen Architects of Washington DC and Member of the Chastleton Cooperative Board.

“His ongoing work in photographing many of the historic and often unnoticed classical buildings in Washington and Baltimore enables us all to appreciate the details that comprise great architecture such as The Chastleton. Through his perceptive and well-trained eye we are all able to more fully appreciate the great craftsmanship that surrounds us.

“For those of us who live in The Chastleton, the opportunity to see these timeless yet contemporary images of our own building each day will help us to fully appreciate this great architectural treasure.“

The Chastleton is one of Washington DC’s most prominent historic residential structures. Designed by architect Phillip M. Jullien, the Tudor and Gothic-Revival structure was built in 1920 on a one-acre site at 16th and R Streets NW, and is adorned with elaborate carved limestone and glazed terra-cotta details. Castles of the Capital

Tinius-Arts is currently involved in a collaborative project with Claudia L. Powell Interior Design, Inc. of Alexandria, Virginia: an educational lecture series entitled “Castles of the Capital — the Meaning of Classical Architecture in Washington’s Private Clubs.”

Interior photographs of many of the city’s most prominent club buildings — produced by Gregory Tinius — accompany the lecture, which is sponsored by the Institute for Classical Architecture and Classical America. The complete collection of images may be viewed here.

Classical Architectural Elements

For several years, Greg Tinius has been building major collection of original classical architectural detail photographs, which is posted here. This web gallery contains a collection of hundreds of photographs of architectural adornments reflecting many interpretations of classical design elements and details. The extensive archive is provided as an educational and inspirational resource for architects, artists, interior designers, and students at all levels, with the goal of encouraging the preservation of traditional architectural styles and sensibilities.
